“Unfu*k Yourself,” by Gary John Bishop is part pep-talk, part self-help book. It doesn’t necessarily break new ground in the self-help genre, but its presentation / aesthetics (ie the book’s “no bullshit” attitude) differentiate it enough to warrant an read.
Pros:
- I enjoyed the book’s “no bullshit,” attitude.
- The book includes quotes from famous philosophers and thinkers, including Teddy Roosevelt, Marcus Aurelius, and Aristotle.
- The use of easily remembered and repeated affirmations like, “I am relentless,” were both useful tools and helpful chapter summaries.
- I enjoyed the author’s vocal performance; his Scottish accent is pronounced.
Cons:
- As I said in the summary, this book doesn’t really break new ground in the self-help genre.
- (nit-pick) The “sub-chapters,” in the book could be better differentiated in the audio and the chapter listing.
- (nit-pick) On a few rare occasions, the vocal performance obscured what the author was saying (especially the name of “Epictetus”), but this was the exception rather than the rule.
Conclusion:
Though it doesn’t bring anything terribly new to the table, this no non-sense self-help book could be just the kick in the arse you’re looking for to jump start your life. It’s short, easy to use, and there’s less swearing than you might expect, given the title.

Hi. I agree with your review of this book. I don’t know why I select books with the f-bomb in the title. Bishops quotes do resonate:
“Life won’t stop for your pauses and procrastinations. It won’t stop for your confusion or fear. It will continue right along without you. Whether you play an active part or not, the show will go on.”
My only regret is the I didn’t get the audio book for the accent.
Have a great week
For me, after a decade and a half of being told to, “watch my mouth,” it’s liberating to pick a book with a swear in the title. It’s almost like I’m getting away with something.
Beyond that, yeah, that quote definitely hits home. It’s discouraging to imagine all the things I COULD have done if I started 10 years ago. On the other hand, that means I could be somewhere excellent in 10 years. It’s all a matter of perspective, I guess.
I hope you also have a great week!
